OFFICIAL LAUNCH
A unique Mizen to Malin Cycle ( IRELAND – HEAD TO HEAD) was launched on Monday night in Abbey CBS, Tipperary town by the 2010 Tipperary Rose, Lynda Kelly before a large attendance of school and local community, fellow cyclists and members of the media.
Dick Walsh, cyclist and coordinator of Abbey India Project is undertaking this 602 km cycle to raise funds for the Project- the school’s Third World Immersion project and for Providence School, Shillong where the students are involved for a number of weeks.
This particular cycle is different in a number of ways – it is a solo effort and it doesn’t follow the usual Mizen-Malin route. At all stages the route is equidistant from east and west coasts and it will pass through Tipperary town on Sat July 24 where there will be a bucket collection . There are no expenses for accommodation, meals etc taken from contributions. It is self-supported – no accompanying car or van. He carries all his own luggage all the way and with no mechanical support. This is to empathise with the children of Providence School and their families who have to bear the burden of subsistence on their own shoulders from day to day.
The cycle starts from the waters edge at Mizen Head early on the afternoon of Thursday July 22 with a leisurely 40 km and then overnight stops in Bantry, Mallow, Thurles, Athlone, Enniskillen and Derry before the final 64 km to Malin Head on the morning of Wednesday July 28. More information on daily progress to be found on www.irelandheadtohead.weebly.com.
